The musty smell is telling you something

Sydney humidity plus a dark, damp coil is perfect mould habitat. Once it establishes, the unit seeds the room with spores every time it runs — the smell is just the part you notice. Wiping the louvres doesn't touch it; the growth lives on the barrel fan and deep in the coil fins.

What we do about it

How do I know if there's mould in my aircon?

A musty smell when it starts up is the classic sign. Shine a torch at the barrel fan behind the front louvre — black speckling on the blades or around the air outlet is mould, and what you can see is a fraction of what's inside.

Is mould in an aircon actually a health issue?

A mouldy unit blows spores through the room every time it runs, which matters for anyone with asthma, allergies or young kids sleeping under it. Cleaning and sanitising the unit removes the source rather than masking the smell.

Will the mould come back?
